Sporting Traditions XVI is the biennial conference of the Australian Society for Sport History. The event will mark the thirtieth anniversary of Sporting Traditions conferences, which began in Sydney in 1977.

Sporting Traditions XVI provides an opportunity to reflect on how the sub-discipline of sports history has evolved in Australia and New Zealand. It will be a time to showcase some of the most innovative & reflective research in academic sports history.

The tripartite theme for Sporting Traditions XVI is ‘Conceiving, locating, and narrating sports history’. These three verbs are, arguably, central to the craft of sports history today. This conference therefore asks delegates to consider recent developments in sports history methods, theoretical approaches and research paradigms.

Announcements

20 June
We are delighted to confirm that Professor Stephen Parker, the recently appointed Vice Chancellor of the University of Canberra will do us the honour of opening the conference on 27 June.

18 June
We are pleased to confirm that, in addition to the University of Canberra, Walla Walla Press has come on board as a conference sponsor. We welcome their involvement. Walla Walla sports history publications will be available for sale at a table in the foyer during the conference.

7 June 2007
Please note that there has been an alteration in the evening schedules of Thursday 28 June and Friday 29 June. The ASSH Biennial General Meeting will now be held on Thursday 28 June, while the subsequent evening, Friday 29 June, features a ceremony to mark the 30th Anniversary of Sporting Traditions Conferences, followed later by the Conference Dinner at the Great Hall, Australian National University.

3 May 2007
The keynote speakers have announced the titles of their presentations. Allen Guttmann will speak on "The ludic and the ludicrous"; Susan Birrell will discuss “Suspended on Everest: Intertextuality and the narrative condition in the pursuit of history”; while Murray Phillips will convey “Sport history and public history: Intersecting narratives?”.

2 May 2007
There are presently only 7 spaces left in the program. Please contact Daryl Adair if you would like to participate. Some juggling of topics and streams is possible. There is also a completely free stream on Day 4 that is "available to a good home". We look forward to imaginative responses.

17 April
The program has recently been updated. Organisers have taken the liberty of suggesting chairs for particular sessions. If you are unable or unwilling to chair a session for which you have been nominated, please email Daryl Adair at Daryl.Adair@canberra.edu.au

16 April
Please note that the cut-off for early-bird registrations is 30 April. This is also the date on which all abstracts need to be submitted. There is presently just one 'student' place left in the program and thirteen 'academic' places remaining. If you are unsure about where your paper may "fit" into the program, please email Daryl Adair at Daryl.Adair@canberra.edu.au

5 April
A point of clarification. The $215 registration fee for Students/Unwaged is intended for (a) Enrolled students and (b) Those seeking full-time employment. Delegates who are retired from full-time employment do not come under the second category.

3 April
It is a pleasure to announce that we will be joined at the conference by three representatives from the China Sports Museum and China Sports Culture Development Centre, Beijing. Mrs. Han Chunling, Mrs. Zhang Xiaolin, and Mrs. Wang Tongyu are also members of the Chinese Society for the History of Physical Education and Sports (CSHPES).

26 March 2007
The student program is now two-thirds full and the academic program 60% complete (with some abstracts still under review). Please note that a DEADLINE of 30 April has been suggested for further abstracts.

23 March 2007
In January this year the registration fees for the conference were reduced (i.e. from $300 to $215 for early-bird students, and from $400 to $360 for early-bird ASSH Members). Some of you have registered on the basis of old figures. You will soon be contacted to arrange a lesser payment figure. Please note also that we have achieved a reduction in price for the conference dinner at ANU House. This has gone from $100 down to $75 (see registration form for details).

15 February 2007
The first draft of the conference program has been uploaded to this web site. There is still more than four months to the opening day, but already around one third of student presentation places and one third of academic presentation places have been allocated. A few abstracts are currently under review, such as a panel session under "ideology and sports history", and once through the refereeing process will be added to the program officially. We are amenable to suggestions for sessions, and have already amended the program to include "gender and sports history" and "minorities and sports history". Please send in abstracts as soon as possible.

17 November 2006
Susan Birrell, Professor of Women's Studies and Health & Sport Studies at the University of Iowa USA, has accepted an invitation to be a keynote speaker at STXVI. Prof Birrell will speak on the theme of "locating sports history" in the context of her current project: an interrogation of the discourses and intersecting relations (race, class, ethnicity, nationality and gender) that surround the climbing of Mt. Everest. We are delighted that Prof Birrell can join us. She replaces Prof Pirkko Markula on the conference program, who sends her sincere apologies at not being able to attend, but extends all good wishes for STXVI.

17 August 2006
Professor Colin Tatz will be guest speaker during the conference dinner at University House, Australian National University, which will be staged from 7.30pm. on Friday 29 June 2007. Colin will reflect on the evolution of Australian sports history over the past thirty or so years.

11 July 2006
Presenters are asked to think creatively about where their research might fit into the program. As examples: a paper that challenges conventional wisdom could be slotted under “Revisionism and sports history”; a critique of FIFA could be slotted under “Institutional sports history”; links between war and sport could be slotted under “Ideology and sports history”; new discoveries in sports history could be slotted either under “Archives, evidence and sports history” or “New frontiers in sports history” depending on whether the research is based on access to sources or new perspectives.

11 July 2006
The venue for the Conference Dinner has now been confirmed. We will be eating at University House, Australian National University, which is a short walk from Rydges Lakeside. The cost for the dinner ($100) will include wine, beer, soft drinks, and musical entertainment.
